The Intimate Psoriasis Diet Connection

A psoriasis diet is a diet that not only helps alleviate psoriasis symptoms but also treats underlying causes and improves general health substantially so that psoriasis has less impact on one’s quality of life.

Since psoriasis is an immune-mediated disease, the goal of any psoriasis diet therapy should be to improve immune function and reduce systemic inflammation.

The best diet to achieve these goals is the so called Paleo diet. Since there is no psoriasis diet per se, one must choose a diet that addresses the fundamental issues that come along with psoriasis.  This excerpt explains the basic idea of the Paleolithic diet.

The Paleolithic diet (paleo diet or paleodiet for short), also sometimes known as the caveman diet, Stone Age diet or hunter gatherer diet, is a way of eating plan based upon the way our ancient ancestors used to eat. Our paleolithic predecessors ate mostly wild plants and animals that a variety of protohuman species regularly ate throughout the Paleolithic era, which is the when our evolution into homo sapiens sapiens was consummated about 2.5 million years ago. It was only about 10,000 years ago that we began eating processed grains, which we could not eat without putting them through some sort of processing outside of their natural state. This was the beginning of the agricultural age and the end of healthy eating for humans in non-hunter gatherer societies. Essentially, this way of eating isn’t a diet at all but how we evolved to eat. It includes all natural meats, high quality fats, roughage (vegetables, seeds, nuts, limited legumes, tubers) ample water, fish, and very few fruits and certainly no processed or refined foods of any kind.

Several psoriasis sufferers on a number of forums have posted their experiences of experimenting with different psoriasis diet types and how it has affected their psoriasis.  Please see the end of the article for relevant links.

Psoriasis diet interactions have not yet been studies sufficiently but there are several scientists looking into this topic. One such scientist is Dr. Loren Cordain who in 2009 made some interesting observations about this way of eating and its effect on psoriasis.

“Although no clinical trials to date have tested the efficacy of treating psoriasis patients with the Paleo Diet, a substantial amount of evidence exists to indicate that it would be therapeutic. I have previously shown how diet may be linked to the etiology and promotion of rheumatoid arthritis via a process of 3-way molecular mimicry in which the immune system mistakenly attacks self tissue because of antigens leaking through from the gut. I believe a similar situation may exist for psoriasis patients.

He stated that while there haven’t been any clinical trials thus far to rigorously test the effect of a paleo diet upon this disease, there is a strong body of corroborative evidence to suggest that it would indeed be therapeutic. Dr. Cordain previously illustrated how diet may be connected to the etiology and development of rheumatoid arthritis through a process of 3-way molecular mimicry whereby the individual’s immune system mistakenly targets and attacks self tissue because of antigens leaking through from the gut. A similar parallel may exist in psoriasis patients!

Here’s why: It’s obvious to the scientific community that psoriasis is mostly a cross-reactive T cell mediated disease involving environmental influences that trigger the disease in genetically susceptible persons. The most salient genetic component of psoriasis is the major histocompatibility complex with the HLA-Cw*0602 allele showing the strongest association.

All this scient talk aside, the reason that this is so important is because certain foods cause the leaky guy syndrome that is often responsible for many inflammatory processes and diseases. Gluten, for example is an extremely inflammatory protein. Any type of plant that grows in a roughly similar ecological niche such as rice, quinoa, grains, etc., is unfit for human consumption. Even after processing, something like quinoa contains chemicals known as saponins which are essentially tiny soap molecules that irritate the gut and deteriorate the guy lining.

A major problem that rises up for psoriasis sufferers when they have permeable guts is that the nutrients that they eat from their foods are not readily absorbed!

Cordain believes that by eliminating all grains, all legumes (peanuts are legumes) and dairy products and by increasing the n-3 content of the diet, many patients with psoriasis may have amelioration or remission of disease symptoms.
